x.name:
Brom
x.age:
247
x.gender:
Male
x.race:
Human, though previously a Dragon Rider before his dragon was slain
x.allegiance:
Varden, obviously, as he was the person who founded them
x.description:
Brom, once tall, proud and formidable, now chooses to hide beneath layers of robes, ranging in color from browns, like those of a monk, to black. His small, dark eyes are hidden beneath bushy eyebrows, and his face is dominated by a hooked, eagle nose. At first glance, his long hair and beard look to be white, which are in fact, silver. Since Saphira's (the First) death, the tips of his ears, which were once slightly pointed at the tips, have returned to almost a normal state, as if the years with his sapphire blue dragon had never occurred.
His primary weapon is a shorter-than-normal sword that he keeps in a plain leather sheath, to avoid any unneccesary attention from outsiders, although he has learnt to use the bow. On his right hand is a gold ring with a blue sapphire stone embedded in it, upon which is a symbol that means that he has been dubbed an "elf-friend" by the leader of the elves herself, Queen Islanzadi.
x.personality:
Brom is one of those people who often knows a lot more than he tells, although mostly it is to keep his identity hidden from everyone except those who knew him as a Dragon Rider. To every one else, however, he is just Brom the storyteller. He keeps to himself for the most part nowadays. Although he will on occasion come outside of his small thatched-roof home on the edge of town to tell one of his stories about werecats, dragons, elves, the dwarves and of the old days when Dragon Riders still thrived.
For those who know Brom well, though, he can be friendly at times, and gruff and impatient during others. When it comes to teaching, he doesn't go easy on his students, and treats them as if he would an equal. When he feels like it is necessary, or when he doesn't think that people who ask him need to know, he will lie about his own history or the answers to any questions he doesn't feel like answering at the time.
x.history:
Brom was born in Kuasta, a trading city located near the western sea. He came from a family of illuminators, his parents named Holcomb and Nelda. When he turned ten years of age, the Dragon Riders of the age visited his hometown, and he was chosen to be the Rider of a deep, sapphire blue egg, whom he later named Saphira.
Abandoning all he had known, he was taken to Ellesmera, the capital of the elven forest of Du Weldenvarden, where his mentor, Oromis, the Rider of an enormous golden dragon named Glaedr, trained the bonded pair in the ways of a Rider and his dragon. During his training, he befriended another young Rider by the name of Morzan, whom he idolized, and was also being instructed by Oromis. When they had completed their training, Brom and Saphira were taken to Vroengard, where together with all of the other Riders of the time, they helped keep the peace within Alaga?sia, and they enjoyed their lives, living each day to the fullest.
A few years before his own birth, however, a Rider named Galbatorix, had the most unfortunate day of his life come, when he and a few friends and their dragons recklessly went into Urgal territory to the north. His friends and dragon were slaughtered, and he went mad with grief. He returned to Vroengard and demanded a second dragon, which was declined by the elder Riders. Infuriated, Galbatorix slaughtered one of the elders and fled.
Nothing was heard until the sorrowful day when he managed to persuade Morzan, who had been Brom's idol for the past years, to leave a gate open in Ilirea (now known as Uru'baen) so that Galbatorix could steal a dragon hatchling. The two Riders and their dragons disappeared, and Brom was torn apart by his betrayal.
Again, nothing was heard for years, and Brom had almost forgotten his idol when the two reappeared again, Morzan filled with Galbatorix's knowledge and training. Together they attacked the Riders, slaughtering any who got in their way. Many of the Riders were killed, but twelve of them joined the rising powers, forming the Thirteen Forsworn.
The original Riders, including Brom, fought the Forsworn and Galbatorix in the final battle at Doru Araeba on Vroengard. In the middle of the battle, Brom and his dragon were captured, and Brom was forced to watch as Galbatorix ruthlessly slaughtered his bonded partner whom he had lived with, shared his thoughts and life with for over two hundred years of his life.
Instead of killing him, like Brom begged him to, Galbatorix left him without a dragon, as he himself had been left alone deep in Urgal territory all of those years ago. The Riders were destroyed, and Galbatorix crowned himself king of all Alagaësia. Ripped apart in grief, Brom wandered Alagaësia alone and spent many years in mourning for his Saphira.
Eventually, the southern part of the Empire tore itself away from the main portion in rebellion of Galbatorix's reign and named itself Surda. Inspired, Brom travelled to the dwarves in the Beor Mountains and asked their permission to start up a group that didn't want to just succeed from the Empire, but to fight it until Galbatorix fell, within their borders, hidden from the king. They agreed, and Brom called his rebellion group, the Varden, meaning the "Warden" in the Ancient Language.
Brom led them for a few years, and then surrendered control to another person, in order to pursue Morzan, whom he blamed for his dragon's death. His efforts eventually led him to a scholar in Teirm named Jeod, who claimed to have a book that detailed a secret passageway into Galbatorix's castle, where he was keeping three dragon eggs under his careful gaze.
Together, they organized to steal the remaining dragon eggs for the Varden, but their thief was only able to steal a single egg, a sapphire blue egg that was eerily similar to his own Saphira's, and who didn't return the egg to the Varden.
Brom travelled througout Alaga?sia, trying to find out where the egg had gone, and during his travels, he met a young woman by the name of Selena, and fell in love with her. He was forced to leave though, in pursuit of the egg, which he had tracked to Gil'ead, where Morzan was waiting for him. They entered a deadly dance of death, and Brom emerged victorious, slaying the man whom he had once looked up to as a leader and friend.
He returned the egg to the Varden, upon arrival, it was immediately touched by all who were loyal to try to find a Rider who would be loyal to them. It never hatched. Eventually, a decision was made to ferry the egg between the Varden and their allies, the elves. This went on for years, and Brom travelled throughout Alagaësia, eventually settling down in Carvahall, where his son, Eragon, now lives.
He doesn't attract too much attention, and many people believe that he was slain at one point or another. None of the villagers of Carvahall, though, suspect in the least that their humble storyteller was once a Dragon Rider.
